Polymer-based varnishes

Varnishes based on thermoplastic polymers are represented by cellulose ether, shellac and acetobutyrate cellulose varnishes. Shellac varnishes are supplied mainly from India. The fact is that for their production, the waste products of insects are used, which are found only in this country.

Ether-cellulose varnishes have the form of a solution of cellulose ether, which contains resins, plasticizers and an organic solvent. Cellulose acetate butyrate varnish is a solution, the raw material for which is cellulose acetate butyrate. The latter is a cellulose ether to which butyric and acetic acids are added.

PVC varnish

Perchlorvinyl varnish has the form of a solution of perchlorovinyl resin in combination with organic solvents. The production of PSC is carried out by chlorination of polyvinyl chloride resin. Such a varnish is characterized by complete transparency; it takes approximately two hours to dry at room temperature. This varnish is used in situations where it is necessary to improve anti-corrosion properties. It is applied directly to oil coatings. Along with this, this material is used to protect building structures that are not highly resistant to the effects of the external environment. Toxicity is a serious disadvantage of perchlorovinyl varnishes. In this regard, their use is permissible only in rooms where people stay is temporary.

The group of varnishes based on thermosetting polymers includes alkyd, polyurethane and epoxy varnish.

Alkyd varnish

Alkyd varnish has the form of a solution of synthetic resin, which is in an organic solvent. When using it, it is possible to obtain a hard, transparent, almost colorless film, which shows high resistance to moisture. In the modern period, it is for alkyd varnish that the highest demand is observed. It is used when carrying out external as well as internal work.

Polyurethane varnis

The application of polyurethane lacquer creates a film with high wear resistance and strength. With its help, varnishing of furniture, floors, as well as musical instruments is performed. In the composition of epoxy varnishes, epoxy resin acts as the main component. Before using the material, a hardener is introduced into its composition. The use of epoxy varnish makes it possible to obtain a film with improved characteristics of resistance to water and alkalis. In addition, it is characterized by high density and adhesion to any materials.

Among the minuses, one can only note the low resistance to environmental influences. In everyday life, epoxy varnish is used in cases where putties, souvenirs are produced, and various materials are also glued together.

Nitrocellulose varnishes

Nitrocellulose varnishes are in the form of cellulose nitrate, represented by a mixture solution based on volatile organic solvents, plasticizers and resins. A feature of this varnish is the presence of increased resistance to environmental influences, the ability to grind and polish, as well as the absence of color. Nitrolac has the smell of pear essence, the drying time is 10-15 minutes. This material is used in situations where it is necessary to finish special-purpose walls in medical institutions or create a coating for built-in furniture.

Bituminous varnish

Bituminous varnish has the form of a solution of bitumen and resin, which are contained in a volatile solvent. Such a varnish is not suitable for outdoor work. The fact is that it has extremely low characteristics of resistance to environmental influences. At the same time, this material is characterized by a fairly high resistance to corrosion. In this regard, with its use, metal surfaces are processed.

Coal varnish has the form of a solution of coal tar pitch, which is in solvent naphtha. Its application makes it possible to obtain a film with waterproof properties and high adhesion. Of the minuses inherent in this varnish, it should be noted low plasticity and resistance to temperature fluctuations. Such a varnish is perfect for protecting against corrosion of metal products that are used in sanitary equipment.
